One thing I’ve realized in the past few days is that while the election was won because of rampant misinformation and paid endorsers across both online and offline platforms, it has already been decided when those who knew better – those who had access to history and higher education – chose to look the other way and enable a candidate who they think they could benefit from.
Clearly, words matter, and it has been really powerful in the social media platform.
They may not see the wrong in perpetuating untruths, after all, that is what (and who) provides them and their family the good life.
But as for those who are still very much feeling the extreme sadness of the situation, I think it’s because their hope of a brighter, easier, more just future somehow got a beating.
We all know the value of connections in this world, and for those who had the misfortune of not having any powerful allies, you do what you could through sheer hard work.
It is those like us who hope for an honest government that would somehow level the playing field. People like us who don’t have the luxury of a safety net of a well-off familial background, nor an option to simply migrate to another country just because things have become difficult and unpleasant here.
No, for better or worse, we’re the ones to face the consequences, both in the short and long term.
We are the ones who clamour for corruption-free leadership because it means you get rewarded for just merits and not social connections.
But sadly, we are the minority. And with power returning to those who shouldn’t have it, for us, it means having to work harder than ever now, with more worries, and no assurances in return.
