After the reality of the matter has sunk in, the depressing thoughts turn to worries and fears about the future.
With a corrupt government keen on protecting personal interests, you can only bet they will do anything and remove anyone to stay in power. And this time they have notes from the past. I can only hope they are not as smart in their strategies.
For the years that we’ve enjoyed press freedom, we’ve also been complacent in protecting it. A professor once told us that there is no such thing as freedom of the press because there will always be vested interests. With the closure of ABS-CBN at a time when the country could use more sources of information, you can’t help but think of what would happen to the critical types of media when the new president assumes office
Also, what about those who strongly voiced their support for the opposition? I can only imagine that fear is also starting to creep in, as they ponder on their actions for the next few days. As we’ve learned in the last few months, people disappearing under suspicious circumstances are still very much rampant.
And what about the opposition itself? It would be unwise to target them directly, but somehow I believe they will still be targeted.
And the people who hoped for change? This will be a blow to their spirit. Who knows if this kind of hope resurfaces again and leads to compelling, forceful action?
As for the revision of history, I worry about this most. If the next generation’s minds are conditioned to believe that everything was all fine and dandy back then, a repeat of all the atrocities of the past is surely bound to happen.
It’s like the country turned into one big cult and you can’t escape from it.
Suddenly, success isn’t about hard work anymore. It’s who you know and how far you’re willing to support those who hold the keys to the land.
When I started to write this, I thought sadness already turned to worry. I now think not.
It is still with a great deal of sadness that I worry.
