I named one of our dogs Albus, from Albus Dumbledore, the wise and enigmatic headmaster of Hogwarts from J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series—who has inspired countless individuals with his wisdom. Partly because I’m just such fan, partly because of his blue eyes, and because of his quotes that resonated with me at different points in my life.
Fresh from the heels of losing our ‘heart’ dog, Albus came during one of the ‘darkest times’, and he has definitely brought love and light in the almost two years he’s been with us. And so to celebrate his birthday, I’m quoting the wizard he is named after.
So, grab your wand (or maybe just a cosy blanket), and let’s dive deep into the magic of Dumbledore’s words and how they resonate with the themes of self-care, motivation, and moving forward.
My 5 Most Favourite Quotes from Dumbledore
“Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.”
This one’s my most favourite.
Life is filled with ups and downs, and during those trying times, it can be difficult to see the silver lining. Dumbledore’s words remind us that even in our lowest moments, we hold the power to find happiness. Turning on the ‘light’ can be as simple as practising gratitude, seeking support from loved ones, or indulging in self-care routines that lift our spirits (such as going for a walk with your furbabies!).
“It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live.”
Too often, we get lost in the ‘what ifs’ and ‘could haves’ of our past or the idealised versions of our future. While dreams and aspirations are important, it’s equally crucial to stay present and cherish the moments we’re living in. Self-care is about recognising and valuing the here and now, taking a moment to breathe, and finding joy in the simple aspects of our lives.
“We must all face the choice between what is right and what is easy.”
Doing what’s right is not always a walk in the park. Sometimes, the path to healing, self-love, and growth is laden with challenges. But as Dumbledore emphasises, the rewards of choosing the right path – the one that aligns with our values and long-term goals – are immeasurable. Facing these choices with courage and conviction is a form of self-care, as it preserves our integrity and inner peace.
“It matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be.”
The essence of motivation lies in growth and progress. We’re all born with certain predispositions, but it’s our actions, choices, and determination that define us. Self-care isn’t just about pampering or relaxing; it’s about investing in personal growth, setting goals, and celebrating our achievements, no matter how small.
“Let us step into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure.”
Moving on doesn’t necessarily mean forgetting the past or disregarding our feelings. It means embracing change, seeking new experiences, and allowing ourselves the freedom to explore uncharted territories. Whether it’s trying a new self-care routine, picking up a hobby, or simply taking a walk under the stars, every adventure, big or small, brings with it lessons, memories, and moments of joy.
Find Your Magic
Albus Dumbledore’s wisdom is a testament to the richness of experiences and insights that come with age. Similarly, as we celebrate Albus’s (the dog!) 2nd birthday, we’re reminded of the many milestones, big and small, that are worth cherishing.
Every day gives us reasons to celebrate—be it a new trick learned, an especially long walk enjoyed, or just a quiet moment of connection. As the years roll by, we look forward to uncovering more layers of wisdom, both from the stories we love and from our beloved canine companion. Here’s to many more years of shared walks, playful tricks, and an abundance of love from each one of our furbabies. Happy birthday, Albus! 🎉🐾
